The Real Issues You Won't Hear from the 2016 Presidential Candidates This Election Year

The countdown has begun.
We now have less than one year until the 2016 presidential election, and you can expect to be treated to an earful of carefully crafted, expensive sound bites and political spin aboutclimate change, education, immigration, taxes and war.

Despite the dire state of our nation, however, you can rest assured that none of the problems that continue to undermine our freedoms will be addressed in any credible, helpful way by any of the so-called viable presidential candidates and certainly not if doing so might jeopardize their standing with the unions, corporations or the moneyed elite bankrolling their campaigns.

The following are just a few of the issues that should be front and center in every presidential debate. That they are not is a reflection of our willingness as citizens to have our political elections reduced to little more than popularity contests that are, in the words of Shakespeare, “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

Police Boycott Tarantino's Free Speech After Remarks at Black Lives Matter Rally

Recently I've been noticing an uptick in the mention of the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film "The Hateful Eight".  Mostly because police agencies around the nation are boycotting the film itself as well as future productions by Tarantino.
This stems less from the content of the film, which has a Main Character that is a Sheriff played by Walton Goggins, than Tarantino's statement at a Black Lives Matter rally.  Said Tarantino "When I see murders, I do not stand by… I have to call a murder a murder, and I have to call the murderers the murderers".  Context of this situation comes with the realization that the public is holding both its government and local police departments accountable for real and perceived brutality and tyranny.

Last week I compared the US – and by extension all economies based on the same model – to Semtex. My exploration of this analogy both ruffled feathers and raised questions. This week, I want to address five of the most common criticisms the article generated.

Semtex seems stable. You can throw it, burn it, jump on it. But when you put the right detonator in it, everything blows up.
I think this is a fair analogy for the US at this time. Not everyone agreed.

I was Listening to Neil Young... Old Man Live at Massy Hall.  And It made me recall this 68ish yeah old man.  I met him when I was fresh out of the Corps.  I worked with him in a Kitchen.  We both started as Dishwashers.

Though it is not clear who is firing the shots or who is being shot at or why... it is apparent that a gun battle broke out on the streets of Ferguson this evening.  The shots were fired while the newly hired interim Chief of Police Andre Anderson, was addressing the media just a few hundred feet away.

Fox News Republican Debate: Win for Big Government

Unfortunately I watched the parody of the election process on Fox news.  It was centered around inane questions, sound bites, cliche's, rhetoric and a decidedly slanted amount of time allotted to certain people over others.

The rules of the debate were 1 minute timed answers with the possibility of 30 second timed rebuttals or follow ups.  I'm not sure if the moderators knew how to run a stop watch because save one candidate, Dr. Ben Carson, all candidates went over the allotted time.  There was a grand total of 39 buzzer or time violations.

Truth In Media recently reported on Alabama Senate Bill 377, a legislative proposal aimed at solving an internal dispute over same-sex marriage. On May 19, the bill, which would end marriage licensing in the state and replace it with a contract process, passed the Alabama Senate with 22 voting in favor and 3 voting in opposition.
In January of this year, a federal court legalized same-sex marriage in Alabama, temporarily allowing some couples to marry before the Alabama Supreme Court issued an injunction, halting the practice. During the period of time in which same-sex marriages were allowed in the state, some local probate judges were refusing to sign off on same-sex licenses, effectively nullifying some couples’ right to marry.

Violence is a question which comes up almost inevitably when working with young people. As a teacher, mentor and tutor I’ve had to break up plenty of fights, many of them physical. Raised as I was, a middle-class person of color, I would often attempt to address these interactions through discussion and reflective mediation. In the conversations following altercations I would ask students what they thought the best way was to handle a conflict in our community–be it a classroom, school or other setting. This I hoped would help get students thinking about empathy, the kinds of relationships they wanted our community to be built with, and their role in nurturing them.

Lobo The King of Currumpaw: A story of love, liberty, freedom and life


CURRUMPAW is a vast cattle range in northern New Mexico. It is a land of rich pastures and teeming flocks and herds, a land of rolling mesas and precious running waters that at length unite in the Currumpaw River, from which the whole region is named. And the king whose despotic power was felt over its entire extent was an old gray wolf.

Old Lobo, or the king, as the Mexicans called him, was the gigantic leader of a remarkable pack of gray wolves, that had ravaged the Currumpaw Valley for a number of years. All the shepherds and ranchmen knew him well, and, wherever he appeared with his trusty band, terror reigned supreme among the cattle, and wrath and despair among their owners. Old Lobo was a giant among wolves, and was cunning and strong in proportion to his size. His voice at night was well-known and easily distinguished from that of any of his fellows. An ordinary wolf might howl half the night about the herdsman's bivouac without attracting more than a passing notice, but when the deep roar of the old king came booming down the cañon, the watcher bestirred himself and prepared to learn in the morning that fresh and serious inroads had been made among the herds.

Old Lobo's band was but a small one. This I never quite understood, for usually, when a wolf rises to the position and power that he had, he attracts a numerous following. It may be that he had as many as he desired, or perhaps his ferocious temper prevented the increase of his pack. Certain is it that Lobo had only five followers during the latter part of his reign. Each of these, however, was a wolf of renown, most of them were above the ordinary size, one in particular, the second in command, was a veritable giant, but even he was far below the leader in size and prowess. Several of the band, besides the two leaders, were especially noted. One of those was a beautiful white wolf, that the Mexicans called Blanca; this was supposed to be a female, possibly Lobo's mate. Another was a yellow wolf of remarkable swiftness, which, according to current stories had, on several occasions, captured an antelope for the pack.

A Second Look at America

I first want to say that I love my country, I have simply grown to dislike what she has become.  I go without sleep for the cost to Freedom that she has enacted upon humanity.  I was asked within the frame of the question "List for me why America is Crap."  This is my response:

UNIVERSAL empire is the prerogative of a writer. His concerns are with all mankind, and though he cannot command their obedience, he can assign them their duty. The Liberty Movement is more ancient than the US Government, and of far higher character in the world than the vassal court of D.C.; he that rebels against reason is a real rebel, but he that in defence of reason rebels against tyranny has a better title to "Defender of the Faith," than any Agent of The State.

Supreme Court: Cops can’t hold suspects to wait for drug-sniffing dog

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Tuesday that the Constitution forbids police from holding a suspect without probable cause, even for fewer than 10 extra minutes.
Writing on behalf of the court, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg declared that the constitutional protections against unreasonable search and seizure prevent police from extending an otherwise completed traffic stop to allow for a drug-sniffing dog to arrive.

Don't argue philosophy or issues with people who disagree with you on fundamentals.  Waste of time.  You will persuade no one, but rile everyone, including yourself.  Don't you have something better to do with your life?  If you really want to convert 'em to the value of freedom, give 'em time, experience with the "helpfulness" of government, and maybe a good book.

Don't even argue with people who are close to you on issues unless you have a good persuasive powers and the issue is important to getting free.  Next to writing letters to congressthings, there is no greater waste of time than yammering about how you'd run some future utopia.  Yes, we need to have a vision of the future.  But there's a great difference between having a vision and moving toward it and merely chewing your intellectual cud while the real world goes to hell around you.

This is a good question, and there are some good traditional answers here. Organizing is important. Activism is important.
At the same time, we should remember that governments don't often reform themselves. One of the arguments in a book I read recently (Bruce Schneier, "Data and Goliath"), is that perfect enforcement of the law sounds like a good thing, but that may not always be the case. The end of crime sounds pretty compelling, right, so how can that be?
Well, when we look back on history, the progress of Western civilization and human rights is actually founded on the violation of law. America was of course born out of a violent revolution that was an outrageous treason against the crown and established order of the day. History shows that the righting of historical wrongs is often born from acts of unrepentant criminality. Slavery. The protection of persecuted Jews.
But even on less extremist topics, we can find similar examples. How about the prohibition of alcohol? Gay marriage? Marijuana?
Where would we be today if the government, enjoying powers of perfect surveillance and enforcement, had -- entirely within the law -- rounded up, imprisoned, and shamed all of these lawbreakers?
Ultimately, if people lose their willingness to recognize that there are times in our history when legality becomes distinct from morality, we aren't just ceding control of our rights to government, but our agency in determing thour futures.
How does this relate to politics? Well, I suspect that governments today are more concerned with the loss of their ability to control and regulate the behavior of their citizens than they are with their citizens' discontent.
How do we make that work for us? We can devise means, through the application and sophistication of science, to remind governments that if they will not be responsible stewards of our rights, we the people will implement systems that provide for a means of not just enforcing our rights, but removing from governments the ability to interfere with those rights.
